Anna Shirley isn’t just a fierce competitor — she’s driven by something far greater than winning. For her, pickleball is more than a sport — it’s a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Dorris, who first placed a paddle in her hand.
A former collegiate tennis player at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Anna’s competitive spirit was always part of her DNA. But it was her mother, Dorris — a national pickleball champion in the 80- and 90-year-old divisions — who truly inspired her journey. The two shared not only a passion for the game but an unbreakable bond that continues to drive Anna today.
“My mom loved this sport and the friendships it brought,” Anna recalls. “Every time I step on the court, I feel her with me.”
Like many players, Anna picked up pickleball during the pandemic — just for fun at first. But her natural athleticism and lifelong love of competition quickly took over. Within months, she was entering tournaments, and before long, she had locked into the Senior Pro Division, where she’s now one of the most respected and accomplished players on tour.

Home, Family, and Inspiration
When she’s not competing, Anna calls Santa Monica, California home — where she trains, coaches, and enjoys time with her family. She’s supported by her husband David, and her two children, Christina (25) and Michael (23), who have been cheering her on every step of the way.
“I couldn’t do this without them,” she says. “They’re my biggest fans and my greatest source of motivation.”
